Rita M. Lauria, JD, PhD

Rita Lauria began mediating more than a decade ago when her university where she served as Associate Professor selected her for training to serve as the initial point of contact for disputes within the university. Her mediation practice now extends beyond university employment disputes to include litigated cases involving intellectual property, entertainment, business and corporate conflicts, securities, negligence, and natural catastrophies, among others. But with more than twenty years experience in higher education, Dr. Lauria knows educational systems and their related policies and procedures. She welcomes these highly specialized types of cases.

Rita Lauria completed advanced employment mediation training at Carolina Dispute Resolution Services. She has studied dispute resolution and trained in diverse programs, including several offered by the California Superior Court. Rita serves on the California Department of Insurance Mediation Panel where she handles natural disaster and catastrophic loss cases. She helps resolve conflicts between homeowners and their insurance companies when disasters like earthquakes and fires hit. She served as Settlement Officer to the Los Angeles Superior Court Voluntary Settlement Conference Program and is a mediation panelist for the National Center for Dispute Settlement. Rita was recognized by the California Superior Court County of Los Angeles for her work as a neutral.
Rita received her law, doctoral, and master’s training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Southern California. She is native to Southern California. She helped campaign for her father when he ran for mayor of Los Angeles and for other public offices throughout the 1960s. Her deep interests in language studies not only inspired her to live and to work throughout the world, but also allowed her diverse experience with various cultures from which she developed special sensitivity to and the ablity to work with and value individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. With her strong understanding of intercultural communications, Rita welcomes and is especially capable of handling conflict that arises in a multicultural context. Rita specializes in working with the people of the Hispanic, Indian (Southern Asia), and Pacific cultures.
Rita Lauria serves as leadership in the International Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, was Founding Editor of the International Law Journal of the Los Angeles County Bar Association International Law, and is a member of the International Institute of Space Law. While currently inactive in North Carolina, Rita is admitted to practice law in both California and in North Carolina.
